Award winning Active Women programme continues to keep Southend Women active
Active Women, which was initially funded for start-up by Sport England, is a popular fitness programme that gives women from Southend-on-Sea opportunities to get involved in fun fitness activities at affordable prices. Activities include Zumba, Aerobics, Clubbercise, Boxercise, Yoga, Running, Pilates and much more, all at a small cost of £3.50 per session.
Active Life for a Healthier You has received further funding from Sport England to encourage women to volunteer in ‘She’s Ready’, a programme that looks to empower women to get involved and help other women start their fitness journey. The inspirational programme offers training to develop their skills and reach their potential, and has been described by some participants as life changing; by giving those involved a new perspective on health and wellbeing through fitness activities.
Cllr Lesley Salter, Cabinet Member for Healthy Communities and Wellbeing, said: “The partnership between the Council and Active Life for a Healthier You has blossomed over the past four years and the participation figures show the programme is doing as intended and delivering fun, healthy activities for local women to not only enjoy, but also benefit from.
“The programme is not just about fitness, it is a way for women to make new friends, develop their own social skills and also gain confidence. We are confident both the Council and Active Life for a Healthier You will continue to provide this help and support for many more successful years.”
Sarah Potts of Active Life for a Healthier You, said: “We are overwhelmed by the success of the programme so far and the impact it has had to so many women’s lives. There is a real need to promote the importance of exercise in our communities and the benefits this can have on our health and wellbeing, which is exactly what this programme has done.
“Active Life provide qualified female fitness staff offering Southend women lots of support, motivation and advice on taking part and how to maintain an active lifestyle. We look forward to welcoming many more women to this fantastic programme.”
